Santorini Views

The island is renowned as having some of the best views in the world

From left to right, you can see the uninhabited volcanic islands Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni and behind them across the Caldera, you can see Thirasia. On the horizon beyond lie the nearby islands of Sikinos and Ios.

In the monastery chapel

On the far left is the wall of the ancient monastery of Profiti Illia which has a chapel and shady gardens open to the public.

Inside the monastery grounds, there's a small chapel which is open to visitors and a terrace with some great views over the south-west of the island. There's also a small shop selling locally made produce such as honey and wine.

On the tip of the island just left of the centre of the picture, the white clifftop houses of Oia are visible with Fira and Pyrgos closer to the camera.

Santorini airport can be seen over towards the east and Profiti Illia and nearby Ancient Thira provide an interesting vantage point as you can watch aircraft flying in below you to land!

View of Pyrgos

Santorini is one of the most popular of the Greek islands but still has many quiet corners, even in high summer. Hire a car or scooter and explore some of the back roads to get a feel of the timelessness of the islands. Although modernisation has crept in here as everywhere, you can still occasionally see donkeys laden with tools or produce on their way to and from fields and farms. Pyrgos is a maze of attractive steep streets lined with whitewashed houses and is well worth a visit.
